Red tide alert issued for Kleinmond

by Supplied

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has issued an urgent marine safety warning following the detection of a thick red tide bloom near Kleinmond. Coastal users, subsistence fishers, and recreational foragers are strongly urged to avoid harvesting any filter-feeding shellfish from the area until the bloom completely dissipates. Local authorities have deployed monitoring teams to assess the spread along the coast.

Red tides occur naturally when microscopic marine algae multiply rapidly under specific warm weather and nutrient conditions, turning the seawater a distinct reddish-brown color. While some algal blooms are entirely harmless, certain species produce dangerous neurotoxins that accumulate rapidly in the tissue of shellfish like mussels, clams, limpets, and oysters. This makes the consumption of wild seafood from the area highly dangerous.

Consuming contaminated shellfish from these affected zones can lead to severe paralytic shellfish poisoning in humans, a dangerous medical condition that affects the central nervous system. Local restaurants and commercial seafood suppliers in the Overberg have already switched to certified safe, inland-tested sources to ensure consumer safety remains uncompromised during this period.

Monitoring toxicity along the coast

Marine authorities are collecting regular water and tissue samples along the Kleinmond coastline to track the toxicity levels of the water column. The bloom is expected to clear as soon as regional wind directions shift and water temperatures drop, which naturally disrupts the life cycle of the toxic algae. Until then, strict enforcement of the harvesting ban remains in place.

Swimming in the affected water is generally discouraged by emergency services, as the concentrated algae can cause minor skin irritations, eye inflammation, and mild respiratory discomfort for sensitive individuals. Beachgoers should look out for official warning signs posted at local boat launches, tidal pools, and main swimming beaches across the Kleinmond area to stay informed and safe.
