The Grille Shack turns a Clarence Drive road trip into a destination of its own

Sometimes the best part of a road trip is finding somewhere that gives you a reason to pull over.

Five kilometres from Gordon’s Bay along Clarence Drive, The Grille Shack @PitStop Lodge combines a 1950s pump diner aesthetic with a distinctly South African personality.

The off-grid roadside destination welcomes road-trippers, petrolheads, families, hikers, cyclists, adventurers, locals and tourists, along with well-behaved pets on leads.

There are more than 60 free parking spaces and wheelchair-friendly facilities, while its off-grid setup means the destination is not reliant on Eskom to keep operating.

But while the setting might get you through the door, the food gives you a reason to stay.

Road-trip food with South African sass

The Grille Shack sums up its approach to food simply: Food is life. Life is short.

The menu follows that philosophy with generous dishes designed for hungry travellers.

Among its favourites are the Southern Fried Chicken & Waffle Burger, Big Daddy Spareribs and Prawn & Peach Salsa Pan.

For something sweet, there is the Rooibos Melktert Spinner.

The kitchen describes its operating gear as “Maximum Throttle”, but there is a straightforward approach behind the playful language.

Food is made from scratch, with The Grille Shack avoiding par-cooked, semi-baked, brine-injected or meat-plumped products bought in bulk.

Fresh produce is sourced locally wherever possible, with the restaurant supporting small businesses and local artisans.

Its approach is firmly rooted in “Local is Lekker”.

More than somewhere to stop for lunch

The Grille Shack forms part of the wider PitStop Lodge destination.

The property includes three luxury vintage cabins, The Tuck Stop, Grown Not Flown Green Depot, Ruby Rose Gift Shop and The Refuel Station.

At The Refuel Station, visitors will find a selection of local craft beer, small-batch spirits and wines.

Families also have a few options to keep younger visitors entertained.

There is an indoor playroom, while outside, a large lawn provides space for children to run and play.

A mini climbing wall adds another activity for younger visitors.

Four-legged road-trippers are welcome too

Pets are part of the experience at The Grille Shack, provided they are well behaved and kept on a lead.

The restaurant has been recognised for its pet-friendly approach by the Best of the Cape awards.

It was named Best Pet-Friendly Restaurant in 2023, 2024 and 2025, before receiving silver in 2026.

A reason to slow down on Clarence Drive

Then there is the roadside setting itself.

Located along Clarence Drive and surrounded by dramatic cliffs, The Grille Shack offers travellers a place to break up the journey rather than rushing towards the next destination.

The combination of its South African-inspired menu, unusual 1950s pump diner character, pet-friendly approach and wider PitStop Lodge offering makes the stop about more than grabbing something to eat.

Whether you arrive after a drive, cycle or hike, the idea is simple: pull in, slow down and stay for a while.
